About Us

Over 150 years of history

The history of de Bijenkorf began in 1870, when Philip Simon Goudsmit opened a small haberdashery on Amsterdam’s Nieuwendijk, naming it Magazijn de Bijenkorf. Business flourished, and in 1915 the store moved to the iconic building on Dam Square. A second store followed in The Hague in 1926, and the Rotterdam branch opened its doors in 1930. Stores in Eindhoven, Utrecht, Amstelveen, and Maastricht followed thereafter. While there were once smaller stores in locations such as Groningen, Den Bosch, and Arnhem, the chain has consisted of seven stores since 2014.

De Bijenkorf’s history is intertwined with art, culture, fashion, and the social development of the Netherlands, as well as with many famous (international) artists—including architects, painters, and designers.
