At the first Olympic Games in 1896, only male participants were welcome. Founder Pierre de Coubertin found female athletes uninteresting and envisioned a role for them at most during the awards ceremony for the winners. The fact that much has changed since then is thanks to sportswomen who broke taboos and pushed boundaries.
