At the first Olympic Games in 1896, only male participants were welcome. Founder Pierre de Coubertin found female athletes uninteresting and envisioned a role for them at most during the awards ceremony for the winners. The fact that much has changed since then is thanks to sportswomen who broke taboos and pushed boundaries.
In *Heroines*, Luca Caioli and Elvira Giménez pay tribute to these icons. Pioneers such as Elizabeth Wilkinson, who presumably won the first boxing match for women in 1722 – with bare hands. Or Tidye Pickett, the first Black female athlete to compete for America at the 1936 Olympic Games.
From role models like Megan Rapinoe and Billie Jean King, legendary Dutch athletes like Fanny Blankers-Koen and Rie Mastenbroek, to pioneers who have fallen into oblivion: 'Heroines' is an inspiring ode to women who have changed the world of sports forever.
