Product Information

In *The Stolen Cookbook of Karina Urbach*, successful Jewish cookbook author Alice Urbach loses her home, family, and career in 1938 following the Anschluss of Austria to Germany. In 1939, she narrowly manages to flee to England. Later, she emigrates to the US, where she makes a name for herself in the 1940s and 1950s with cooking workshops and television shows.

During a visit to a Viennese bookstore, Alice finds her own cookbook, the bestseller *So gekocht man in Wien!* from 1938. But the cover lists the name of a man unknown to her as the author: Rudolf Rösch. Who was this so-called master chef? Did he even exist?

Karina Urbach, Alice's granddaughter, decided to investigate this remarkable history. In *The Stolen Cookbook*, she recounts the eventful life of her grandmother, the Julia Child of Austrian cuisine, and uncovers an unknown chapter of the Second World War. What the Nazis did not want, they eradicated. What they did want, they appropriated.
